Hello, readers!
Welcome to the next post in our ongoing series: “Same Pattern, Different Bodies.” Today, we’re taking a closer look at the Closet Case Ginger Jeans pattern.
The pattern description:
With a modern and flattering cut, Ginger Jeans are the daily staple you’ll reach for again and again. View A features a comfortable low rise with narrow stovepipe legs. View B is sexy and high-waisted with skinny legs and a tummy-slimming pocket stay. Engineered to be as flattering as possible, Ginger Jeans feature subtly shaped back pockets to highlight the curve of the bum, slimming side seams and a higher back rise to prevent peekabooty. Designed for stretch denim, Ginger Jeans will hug you in all the right places.
Many of our CSC members have sewn their own Ginger Jeans with excellent results.

Suzy has made several pairs of Ginger jeans (including Ginger shorts!).
- Sewed these in size 18.
- Added 1″ to the inner leg seam on the front pattern piece.
- Added 1″ length at the knee.
- Added 1″ to the center back height.
- Adjusted the side seams, adding to the back and taking from the front.
- Added a pocket stay.
- Shaped the side seams to fit lower thighs and knee area.
- Construction changes with the zipper and serged the waistband facing instead of turning under.
- Shaped the waistband to be more curved to stop back gaping.
- Added elastic to the waistband to help stabilize and stop it from stretching out.

- Sewed these in size 18.
- Added pull-on elastic waistband.
- Added front zippers.
- Added 1″ to inner leg seam on front.
- Added a pocket stay.
- Hyperextended calf adjustment.
- Changed the shape of the front and back pockets.
- Slimmed the calf from the knee down.

Gillian has sewn several pairs of Ginger jeans and will no doubt sew up another fantastic version.
- Added a covered elastic pull-on waistband – Here’s how!
- Removed a wedge from back yoke.
- Added a wedge at front waist.
- Scooped out front crotch curve.
- Lowered waist 1/2″.
- Shortened at the ankle.
- Skipped the fly.

- Much the same as her previous pairs, but added a pocket stay.

Gillian says that she’s “still fiddling with a knock knee adjustment.”
Manju made a fabulous pair of Ginger jeans that she loves and finds them to be “comfortable, flattering and the perfect fit” for her.
- Cut size 16 at waist, grading to 18 at the hips and tapering to 16 below the knees.
- Removed 1″ from each leg from the calf up to the knee.
- Removed 1″ from both inner and outer seams.
- Pinched out 2″ from waistband and curved it.
- Initially shortened the length by 2″, but ended up adding 1″ below the knee as she prefers her skinny jeans to be slightly gathered aroudn the lower calf.
- Added a pocket stay.
- Moved the back pockets towards the center back seam by 1″.
- Scooped the front and back crotch out by 1/4″.

Nicole has made many pairs of Ginger jeans (+ shorts!) and loves sewing jeans.
- Sewed a size 14.
- Lengthened rise by 1″.
- Small full calf adjustment.
- Added a pocket stay.

- Cut out size 16, going down to 14.
- Took out a wedge along the back waistband and yoke.
- Slimmed down the thighs, mostly taken out of the back thigh.

Jenny is a huge fan of her Gingers and just recently sewed up another pair!
- Started with the size 18.
- Did a 3/4″ thin thighs adjustment.
- Did a 1/4″ flat bum adjustment.
- Adjusted seam allowances through the basting process.
- Added pocket stay.

- Much the same as the first pair, but after taking them at the side seams, went down to a size 16.

The Ginger Jeans pattern goes up to a size 20 (waist – 39″, hip – 48″), but many sewists who have sewn these jeans have stated that the pattern has a generous fit. So if you’re out of the size range, you may be able to sew yourself a pair without grading up. By basting the side seams, you can check the fit and see how it works for you. Thankfully this pattern uses stretch denim, which can be more forgiving.
I’ve been considering sewing a pair ever since this pattern came out, but after putting this post together and reading more about the alterations and fit, sewing myself a pair of Gingers is definitely in my queue!
GIVEAWAY: Closet Case Patterns has generously offered to give away a pattern bundle of both the Ginger Skinny Jeans and the Morgan Boyfriend Jeans to one lucky CSC reader! To enter the random drawing, please leave a comment below by Monday, September 5, 2016 and tell us which version you’d make.
*UPDATE* The winner of the Ginger/Morgan jeans pattern bundle is Dovile.
Sewing my own jeans has been on my to-do list for a while now. I might just have to make myself sew it this autumn. I’d make Ginger Jeans as I love Jenny’s white pair!

I’d make the ginger skinny jeans! I’ve been eyeing that pattern.
I want to see them All. I am going to start with the low waisted but skinny the legs. I just bought some sale fabic to do a test pair. I am so excited! I hate shopping for pants, it makes me feel like I must be deformed. You ladies inspire me to feel good about myself in clothes that fit my body. Thanks for all you do.
They all look awesome!
Haven’t gotten my hands on the Morgan Boyfriend jeans, yet. Thanks for the opportunity
Wow, these are all great makes, I haven’t worn jeans for years but I really want to make a pair now! Thanks for this contest!
I think I’d go with the Morgan boyfriend jeans first, they look so cute.
I’ve been wanting to try the Ginger Jeans for a long time. I teach sewing lessons at our little local store and many people want to try jeans because they are SO tired of trying store-bought ones to fit!!
I’d love to make the high waisted gingers- TNT jeans are a dream of mine!
This pattern has been on my wish list for awhile. I would love to make the mid-rise version with narrow legs in stretch denim.
I love this series and I’ve been coveting the Ginger jeans for a while. I’d definitely make up a pair of skinnies for myself! 🙂
Awesome giveaway! I would love to make jeans with these patterns. Thanks!
I would like the high waisted ginger jeans, I feel they are a much more flattering style on most women. ?
I would like the high waisted ginger jeans, I feel they are a much more flattering style on most women. ?
I want to make some Gingers!
I have been wanting to try the jeans patterns since they came out. It is hard for me to spend that much on a pattern ( no matter how fabulous) when I can frequently purchase from the big 4 for .99. The elastic waistband is right up my alley. I’ll be trying this on my next pair of pants.
Oh, definitely the low rise Ginger Jeans. Followed immediately by several Ginger Shorts. Thanks so much for offering this bundle. I have admired the Ginger Jeans such a long time.
Think I’d try the boyfriend version first… Because I’ve a fear of skinny jeans – think these may conquer all that though!
Thanks for the opportunity!
So hard to decide! I think I would try the Morgans first, though.
thanks for the giveaway!!
I am super interested to know if anyone has tried both the Gingers with the flare extension & the Birkin Flares with the skinnies extension, for comparison’s sake. I’m completely torn between the 2, since they’re so similar.
Having said that, those Morgans are unique af and I would for sure like to win that bundle haha!
I’ve been stalking everyones great Ginger jeans since the pattern was released, and I know I am finally brave enough to try them!
GINGER SKINNY JEANS, would be more my fit and style.
What a great post – I really enjoy the whole same pattern, different bodies idea. I’d have a tough time choosing between the low-waisted Gingers and the Morgans. Maybe one of each!
I have never sewed pants or jeans before, so I am kinda scared… but, the prospect of wellfitting jeans is sooo intriguing! I have a generous tumy, so I would make the high.waisted ginger jeans – hooray for stretch!
I’d make the Morgan jeans, because I need to use a sturdy non-stretch denim (figuring that if a stretch denim hugs your good curves, it also hugs the bad ones, i.e. cellulite thighs). And I need a wider thigh and knee than Ginger’s offers. But, with a bit of grading, and Suzy’s elastic waist hack, the Gingers would work too. Oh dear, I don’t know. Let me win both?
I would definitely make the Ginger jean. After making multiple pairs of jeans for my partner it would be really nice to treat myself to some made-to-measure 🙂
Sounds like Ginger Skinny Jeans would be the best for me – i have not made any pants for myself since 20 years ago!
After reading this post, is make the ginger jeans, but I’ve really liked some of the Morgan’s I’ve seen.
Beautiful relisations! make me want to give a try to this pattern!
I would make the high waisted!
These are great, once I’ve got some more confidence I’ll definitely be making some.
I wear a lot of skinny jeans so I’d love to shake it up and try the Morgan boyfriend jeans first. Thanks for the opportunity!
I would love to try sewing jeans. I am so hard to fit that I haven’t had the courage yet. These patterns and sewn products are adorable!
Oh my gosh, I love this post! I’ve been wanting to make Ginger jeans for a while, possibly with a bootcut hack, but I’ve been a bit afraid to pull the trigger. I’d love to win the giveaway and then have to be accountable to you lovely ladies for gettin’ ‘er done!
I’d love to try the low rise version of the Ginger skinny jeans!
Those boyfriend jeans don’t look bad either….
Thank you for the great giveaway!!
This is such a great feature – I love seeing everyone’s work lined up! I think I’d make the Ginger, since I love a high waist, but the Morgans are SO cute too!
I think I would make both the high-waisted Ginger, as well as the Morgan. I like my jeans to give a little more coverage, but I also like non-stretch denim for working in the garden and/or around the house, as I find it wears better and isn’t as susceptible to inner-thigh “chub rub”.
I’d love to give these a try. I’ve seen lots of great versions online, but am bit scared of making jeans! I do find it near impossible to find RTW ones I like though, so maybe this pattern is the answer!
High waisted with skinny legs!
I am terrified but would love to try a pair of the high waist Ginger jeans. This would be my first attempt at sewing pants of any sort!
The high waisted Giner jeans would be a blessing. Those low rise pants are not for me.
I would make the pull on high waisted version. They all look nice. I would love a chance to win!
I’ve had the Ginger jeans on my list to make all year! I really should get cracking on that, lol, but the Morgans look great too and I have some great rigid denim that would work for them in le stash. Yay for jeans!
I”d make skinny jeans first. No, boyfriend jeans first, then skinny. Yes definitely boyfriend. Wait, skinny first. In a dark wash. No, in a pop of color! Wait…….boyfriend? Maybe? Is it practically to do about 4 pair simultaneously?
Pull on high waisted gingers sound just right for me!
I’ve almost given up on ever finding a pair of skinny jeans that fit properly, so I would make those. I’ve never had the courage to tackle jeans before. They look intimidating.
Thanks so much for the offer!
High waisted Gingers for me! My sister-in-law recommended that pattern as she has made jeans for herself and her three daughters – the fit for each one is spot-on! And I already have a piece of mid-wash denim with white polka dots that would be standouts in my fall wardrobe.
I would love to win the ginger jeans pattern so I could make the high wasted version.
Mid rise jeans are on my to do list. I’d love to try this pattern for them
I’m so impressed by all the different adjustments to the same pattern – you make it look so easy, and get great results! I fancy making them for myself now!
I would love to make the high waist Ginger jeans. I have been looking for stretch jeans in different colours – red, green and brown. You wouldn’t believe that this is impossible! Maybe you do? Anyway, this is one of the main reasons I have decided to start sewing my own clothes. Thank you for this opportunity to win the pattern. ?
