Hello, readers!
Welcome to the next post in our ongoing series: “Same Pattern, Different Bodies.” Today, we’re taking a closer look at the Closet Case Ginger Jeans pattern.
The pattern description:
With a modern and flattering cut, Ginger Jeans are the daily staple you’ll reach for again and again. View A features a comfortable low rise with narrow stovepipe legs. View B is sexy and high-waisted with skinny legs and a tummy-slimming pocket stay. Engineered to be as flattering as possible, Ginger Jeans feature subtly shaped back pockets to highlight the curve of the bum, slimming side seams and a higher back rise to prevent peekabooty. Designed for stretch denim, Ginger Jeans will hug you in all the right places.
Many of our CSC members have sewn their own Ginger Jeans with excellent results.

Suzy has made several pairs of Ginger jeans (including Ginger shorts!).
- Sewed these in size 18.
- Added 1″ to the inner leg seam on the front pattern piece.
- Added 1″ length at the knee.
- Added 1″ to the center back height.
- Adjusted the side seams, adding to the back and taking from the front.
- Added a pocket stay.
- Shaped the side seams to fit lower thighs and knee area.
- Construction changes with the zipper and serged the waistband facing instead of turning under.
- Shaped the waistband to be more curved to stop back gaping.
- Added elastic to the waistband to help stabilize and stop it from stretching out.

- Sewed these in size 18.
- Added pull-on elastic waistband.
- Added front zippers.
- Added 1″ to inner leg seam on front.
- Added a pocket stay.
- Hyperextended calf adjustment.
- Changed the shape of the front and back pockets.
- Slimmed the calf from the knee down.

Gillian has sewn several pairs of Ginger jeans and will no doubt sew up another fantastic version.
- Added a covered elastic pull-on waistband – Here’s how!
- Removed a wedge from back yoke.
- Added a wedge at front waist.
- Scooped out front crotch curve.
- Lowered waist 1/2″.
- Shortened at the ankle.
- Skipped the fly.

- Much the same as her previous pairs, but added a pocket stay.

Gillian says that she’s “still fiddling with a knock knee adjustment.”
Manju made a fabulous pair of Ginger jeans that she loves and finds them to be “comfortable, flattering and the perfect fit” for her.
- Cut size 16 at waist, grading to 18 at the hips and tapering to 16 below the knees.
- Removed 1″ from each leg from the calf up to the knee.
- Removed 1″ from both inner and outer seams.
- Pinched out 2″ from waistband and curved it.
- Initially shortened the length by 2″, but ended up adding 1″ below the knee as she prefers her skinny jeans to be slightly gathered aroudn the lower calf.
- Added a pocket stay.
- Moved the back pockets towards the center back seam by 1″.
- Scooped the front and back crotch out by 1/4″.

Nicole has made many pairs of Ginger jeans (+ shorts!) and loves sewing jeans.
- Sewed a size 14.
- Lengthened rise by 1″.
- Small full calf adjustment.
- Added a pocket stay.

- Cut out size 16, going down to 14.
- Took out a wedge along the back waistband and yoke.
- Slimmed down the thighs, mostly taken out of the back thigh.

Jenny is a huge fan of her Gingers and just recently sewed up another pair!
- Started with the size 18.
- Did a 3/4″ thin thighs adjustment.
- Did a 1/4″ flat bum adjustment.
- Adjusted seam allowances through the basting process.
- Added pocket stay.

- Much the same as the first pair, but after taking them at the side seams, went down to a size 16.

The Ginger Jeans pattern goes up to a size 20 (waist – 39″, hip – 48″), but many sewists who have sewn these jeans have stated that the pattern has a generous fit. So if you’re out of the size range, you may be able to sew yourself a pair without grading up. By basting the side seams, you can check the fit and see how it works for you. Thankfully this pattern uses stretch denim, which can be more forgiving.
I’ve been considering sewing a pair ever since this pattern came out, but after putting this post together and reading more about the alterations and fit, sewing myself a pair of Gingers is definitely in my queue!
GIVEAWAY: Closet Case Patterns has generously offered to give away a pattern bundle of both the Ginger Skinny Jeans and the Morgan Boyfriend Jeans to one lucky CSC reader! To enter the random drawing, please leave a comment below by Monday, September 5, 2016 and tell us which version you’d make.
*UPDATE* The winner of the Ginger/Morgan jeans pattern bundle is Dovile.
Sewing my own jeans has been on my to-do list for a while now. I might just have to make myself sew it this autumn. I’d make Ginger Jeans as I love Jenny’s white pair!

Yes please! I will move this project to the top of the list.
I would love to make the view A of the Ginger skinny jeans 🙂
I’ve been eyeing the Ginger jeans since they came out (and even already have some denim set aside) but I haven’t taken the plunge yet because the only pants I’ve made so far are Hudsons and I haven’t worked up the courage for “real” pants yet. I’d do it in a heartbeat if I happened to win the bundle!
These have been on my wish list for quite awhile! Would love to try to make my own jeans!
It’s so cool seeing these on so many people! Since ON has changed the cut of their jeans from something that was perfect on me to something that doesn’t fit right anywhere, I’m getting more and more tempted to give the gingers a try.
I’m excited to have found the CurvySewingCollective! So many stores don’t offer choices for curvy gals 16+ sized which is why I started sewing my own clothes years ago. But I have to confess, I’ve never tried to sew jeans before. The Ginger pattern looks so versatile that I’d love to try it!
Beautiful jeans round-up! I love the elastic waist mods, they look so comfy. I would love to make a pair (or a dozen!) of Ginger skinnies.
I love the look of the Boyfriend Jeans but really like the stretch with the Gingers…..
Oh, the Ginger Jeans! I’ve been looking at these since they were reviewed here. It sounds as if these were made for a curvy figure. Thanks for offering a give-away.
I’d like to make the Morgan Jeans. I love old fashioned denim…without the the stretch. But RTW without stretch doesn’t fit!
Would love to try the high waisted ginger jeans.
I’m still new to sewing, but I love the Ginger jeans!! Once I hone my skills, I would like to make the low-rise.
I would love to have a pair of the Ginger Skinny Jeans. They look great one everyone, and Heather has provided very thorough guides. I look forward to a pair of me-made jeans one day!
Wow – what a great way to showcase a pattern! This definitely provides the inspiration – and the confidence – to DIY jeans 🙂
I’ve got RTW skinnies that I love, so I’d start with the Morgan Boyfriend jeans – in colored denim for Fall!
Ooh i would love to win these patterns! I’ve never worn white pants of any description (the darker the better, right?!) But i think i would really like a pair of white gingers. I saw a tutorial on the Closet Case Files page to make a mid-rise pair, so i think i would do that. I would also love to make a pair of morgan boyfriend jeans. I tend to get stuck in the thinking of “x style is the most flattering and so i should only ever wear that style. EVER” but i think i want to try new things!
Love the look of these Jean Would really like to try them
Ginger Jeans. But the Morgan is a close 2nd.
Really enjoy seeing how good everyone looks in these jeans!
I’m so nervous about trying to sew jeans, but I’m getting more and more tempted every time I see these versions. I think I’d try the Morgan boyfriends first, as I’m more keen on slouchy comfort than the stylish slim fit of the gingers!
I’ve been wanting to try the ginger jeans since they came out but haven’t been brace enough to bite the bullet. This would be a great chance!
I’d love to try the Ginger Jeans
I would like to try the Boyfriend jeans.
This is a great post – I am finding the hints and tips extremely useful. I had been leaning toward the Morgan Boyfriend Jeans, but after reading these comments I would definitely make the Ginger Jeans first. Keep the great information flowing – Thank you!
These jeans look so great on everyone. I would love to try the pattern myself.
And I think I’d make the Gingers.
I would like to try the Morgan boyfriend jeans!
Thank you for this post! I have been eyeing this pattern for quite some time and would like to tackle jeans!
I did want to ask, does it have to be made in stretch denim?
Thanks for the opportunity to win this delicious pattern.
Chris
I think I would do the gingers but with a straight leg or bootcut
I’d like to make both pairs, because it’s difficult to find RTW jeans that fit just right…I would start with the Ginger Jeans!
I have never thought about making jeans – till now! Definitely the gingers, and I need a new pair so desperately! These ladies are all so talented! Inspirational!
I would definitely want to try my hand at the ginger Jean zipped version! I’ve been hearing a ton about these jeans and I’ve been waiting for a good jeans pattern.
I’m as far as style I am a fan of the skinny leg fit
I’d like to make both but the first pair would definitely be the high waisted ginger jeans. They look amazing. I’ve never found Jeans that fit well to fit so I’d like to try and make my own!
I’ve been eyeing the ginger flares! I love a good blotchy or flare Jean, and they look about perfect 🙂
Bootcut not blotchy. Stupid autocorrect lol
I have always feared sewing jeans because of all the fitting I thought I needed. It’s very hard to find a good jeans in my size in shops. But seeing me this I am thinking : time to try! 🙂 I would make the ginger first and then the Morgan in time for spring 🙂
First Ginger, then Morgan. Would definitely like to try both.
High waist Gingers for me! This was such a great round up, very eye-opening to see he same pattern on all sorts of different, beautiful bodies.
Love them both! I guess I would try for the low-waisted version first. Would be amazing to be able to make jeans that actually fit!
I’m new to jeans making though I am a long time sewer. I would love to try the Ginger High wasted skinny leg pattern. I have begun to hate the k it wideleg pants I make with the elastic waist. They’re comfy, but I look snd feel 20 years older than my age (60). I miss jeans that fit me!
I’d probably go for the high-waisted skinny jeans first. I really want to try the boyfriend jeans though too since that’s the style I wear more often. I do envy everyone’s skinny jeans shown here! So fantastic.
I’d made the ginger jeans and pair it with a pattern that I’ve made many times, jacket express navy Islander sewing patterns
I think I would try the Ginger Jeans although I don’t know that I would make them skinny. Looks like a versatile pattern!
A Gurl can never have too many jean,!
I would love to make the high waisted version of Ginger and see if I can make the coin pocket functional. It’s where I stash my insulin pump on some of my RTW jeans, but others don’t have a pocket quite big enough. I’ve been eyeing this pattern forever. Thanks for giving me more reasons to buy it!
Wow where to start….I’ve lost 130 pounds and love my jeans…I think I’d make every style in colours as we’re coming into summer in new zealand. I’d love yellow, red or orange….I bought the patterns in pdf format and the how to book but wish I’d bought proper patterns now so would love to win….after jeans I’m going to try their swimwear….
After seeing how awesome the Ginger Jeans look on everybody I would absolutely love to have a copy! Ginger Jeans for me please!
I have had the skinny Ginger Jeans on my radar since the pattern was released but, as I am relatively new to sewing I’ve been nervous to commit. This post has renewed my interest and I am definitely keen to give this pattern some serious consideration!
I’m not sure about sewing jeans for me – all of you have had to make so many alterations! But I’d try the skinny jeans.
This is great, thanks everyone for sharing. I think I would make the high waisted pair, they may be the most flattering on me.
I am terrified to sew jeans, but it is not like I have TNT RTWs so I must break through the fear. I think I’d sew up Gingers with an adjustment or two for the vertically challenged and thighs-formerly-known-as-gymnast.
I would make Ginger! Because saying “Ginger Jeans” just sounds jolly.
I’d have to go for the Morgan Boyfriend Jeans!
