Same Pattern, Different Bodies: Ginger Jeans

August 29, 2016 by Tanya

Hello, readers!

Welcome to the next post in our ongoing series:  “Same Pattern, Different Bodies.”  Today, we’re taking a closer look at the Closet Case Ginger Jeans pattern.

The pattern description:

With a modern and flattering cut, Ginger Jeans are the daily staple you’ll reach for again and again. View A features a comfortable low rise with narrow stovepipe legs. View B is sexy and high-waisted with skinny legs and a tummy-slimming pocket stay.  Engineered to be as flattering as possible, Ginger Jeans feature subtly shaped back pockets to highlight the curve of the bum, slimming side seams and a higher back rise to prevent peekabooty. Designed for stretch denim, Ginger Jeans will hug you in all the right places.

Many of our CSC members have sewn their own Ginger Jeans with excellent results.

ginger jeans

Suzy

Suzy has made several pairs of Ginger jeans (including Ginger shorts!).

Tester version

  • Sewed these in size 18.
  • Added 1″ to the inner leg seam on the front pattern piece.
  • Added 1″ length at the knee.
  • Added 1″ to the center back height.
  • Adjusted the side seams, adding to the back and taking from the front.
  • Added a pocket stay.
  • Shaped the side seams to fit lower thighs and knee area.
  • Construction changes with the zipper and serged the waistband facing instead of turning under.
  • Shaped the waistband to be more curved to stop back gaping.
  • Added elastic to the waistband to help stabilize and stop it from stretching out.

ginger jeans4

Zippered version

  • Sewed these in size 18.
  • Added pull-on elastic waistband.
  • Added front zippers.
  • Added 1″ to inner leg seam on front.
  • Added a pocket stay.
  • Hyperextended calf adjustment.
  • Changed the shape of the front and back pockets.
  • Slimmed the calf from the knee down.

ginger jeans7

Gillian

Gillian has sewn several pairs of Ginger jeans and will no doubt sew up another fantastic version.

First denim pair

  • Added a covered elastic pull-on waistband – Here’s how!
  • Removed a wedge from back yoke.
  • Added a wedge at front waist.
  • Scooped out front crotch curve.
  • Lowered waist 1/2″.
  • Shortened at the ankle.
  • Skipped the fly.

gillian stretch denim

Cone Mills pair

  • Much the same as her previous pairs, but added a pocket stay.

gillian front back

Gillian says that she’s “still fiddling with a knock knee adjustment.”

Manju

Manju made a fabulous pair of Ginger jeans that she loves and finds them to be “comfortable, flattering and the perfect fit” for her.

Dark denim pair

  • Cut size 16 at waist, grading to 18 at the hips and tapering to 16 below the knees.
  • Removed 1″ from each leg from the calf up to the knee.
  • Removed 1″ from both inner and outer seams.
  • Pinched out 2″ from waistband and curved it.
  • Initially shortened the length by 2″, but ended up adding 1″ below the knee as she prefers her skinny jeans to be slightly gathered aroudn the lower calf.
  • Added a pocket stay.
  • Moved the back pockets towards the center back seam by 1″.
  • Scooped the front and back crotch out by 1/4″.

ginger jeans

Nicole

Nicole has made many pairs of Ginger jeans (+ shorts!) and loves sewing jeans.

Low-rise pair

  • Sewed a size 14.
  • Lengthened rise by 1″.
  • Small full calf adjustment.
  • Added a pocket stay.

ginger jeans6

High-waisted pair

  • Cut out size 16, going down to 14.
  • Took out a wedge along the back waistband and yoke.
  • Slimmed down the thighs, mostly taken out of the back thigh.

ginger jeans3

Jenny

Jenny is a huge fan of her Gingers and just recently sewed up another pair!

First pair

  • Started with the size 18.
  • Did a 3/4″ thin thighs adjustment.
  • Did a 1/4″ flat bum adjustment.
  • Adjusted seam allowances through the basting process.
  • Added pocket stay.

ginger jeans1

White pair

  • Much the same as the first pair, but after taking them at the side seams, went down to a size 16.

ginger jeans2

______________________________________________________________________________________________________

The Ginger Jeans pattern goes up to a size 20 (waist – 39″, hip – 48″), but many sewists who have sewn these jeans have stated that the pattern has a generous fit.  So if you’re out of the size range, you may be able to sew yourself a pair without grading up.  By basting the side seams, you can check the fit and see how it works for you.  Thankfully this pattern uses stretch denim, which can be more forgiving.

I’ve been considering sewing a pair ever since this pattern came out, but after putting this post together and reading more about the alterations and fit, sewing myself a pair of Gingers is definitely in my queue!

GIVEAWAY:  Closet Case Patterns has generously offered to give away a pattern bundle of both the Ginger Skinny Jeans and the Morgan Boyfriend Jeans to one lucky CSC reader!  To enter the random drawing, please leave a comment below by Monday, September 5, 2016 and tell us which version you’d make.

*UPDATE* The winner of the Ginger/Morgan jeans pattern bundle is Dovile.

Sewing my own jeans has been on my to-do list for a while now. I might just have to make myself sew it this autumn. I’d make Ginger Jeans as I love Jenny’s white pair!

I would really like to make The Morgan jeans. Have only had strech jeans for a long while, and should like to try the jeans without.

Since one of my ultimate goals and one of the reasons to take up sewing in the first place is to be able to sew my own jeans, I would love to win the pattern to make a high waisted Ginger jeans.

I haven’t been brave enough to try jeans yet, but a free pattern would mean I’d have to! Boyfriend jeans and skinny jeans would do it for me.

  10. Dixie O'Dare says

I would love to make myself a pair of the high waisted jeans, as I always struggle to find jeans that fit me well, as my waist is 2 sizes smaller than my hips. This pattern looks like it could be easily altered for my measurements 🙂

  11. Kathy says

    August 30, 2016 at 1:54 am

I would make the skinny with a high waist. My legs are my best feature so I love wearing slim pants with boots

I love high waisted skinny jeans, but I’ve been dying to try out the Morgan pattern for a while, too. Thanks for the giveaway!

  13. Jennie says

    August 30, 2016 at 1:29 am

Love all the jeans but since having four daughters I no longer wear them, I prefer to swish around in long dresses. I am feeling like it us time to revisit jeans so this might just kick my but into gear!

Oh I love that these jeans have a back yoke. They look good on everyone who’s photo you shared here. Jeans are probably too advanced for my current sewing skill level but after seeing all the versions, u think I’d just jump in and have a go.

  31. Lelia Lyon says

    August 29, 2016 at 10:27 pm

I’ve only just joined the skinny jean party and am a huge fan so I would be all over the high rise Gingers! Thanks for all your work reviewing these.

  32. Sharon Doublin says

    August 29, 2016 at 10:24 pm

Both are attractive, but I think I would make the Ginger jean.

  33. Ginger says

    August 29, 2016 at 10:12 pm

    I would make view A

  34. Diana Steiner says

    August 29, 2016 at 10:05 pm

Low rise skinnies for sure. They look like my favorite rtws which are shot (holes worn through the thighs).

  35. Camila A. says

    August 29, 2016 at 10:03 pm

I’d love to try the same version as Suzy’s tester pair – beautiful fit!

  36. Ennis A Weeks says

    August 29, 2016 at 9:53 pm

Since it is made for stretch denim. I would start with View B of the Ginger jeans. But I love the look of the Boyfriends Jeans also. They look so comfortable. So I’ll have to try both. All the Ginger jeans pics look great.
    these do fit so good.

  37. Jes says

    August 29, 2016 at 9:51 pm

These jeans look great on all of you!! I’ve been drooling over the Ginger pattern forever! I would love to make the skinny version of them!

  38. Rach says

    August 29, 2016 at 9:47 pm

I think I’d start with the high waist Gingers because they would fill a void in my closet, but the Morgan pattern is definitely a style I wear often. I should try these whether I win or not! 🙂

  39. Denise says

    August 29, 2016 at 9:40 pm

I’ve tried on so many RTW skinny jeans, but they never look right on me. I’d love to sew some Ginger skinny jeans that will actually fit me!

  40. Stephanie Schiel says

    August 29, 2016 at 9:39 pm

I have been eyeing up this pattern for quite some time, but have a hard time fitting pants. I love the versatility of this pattern. I love to wear my higher boots in the fall and winter and this would be a perfect pattern for that!

  41. Emily says

    August 29, 2016 at 9:26 pm

I would finally make the Ginger Skinny Jeans! I’ve been so ready to get on a jean making kick and these are definitely going to be the pattern I start with (baring the very slim chance I did some unselfish jeans sewing for the other half). Thanks 🙂

  42. Vee says

    August 29, 2016 at 9:21 pm

I’m kinda in love with the high-waisted Gingers. I’d love a chance to try my hand at jeans

  43. Schevone says

    August 29, 2016 at 9:00 pm

I love these articles btw. Reader but long time lurker. Commenting to say I haven’t tried my hands at jeans, but would love to try either, but partial to the skinny jeans.

  44. Lora Martin says

    August 29, 2016 at 8:30 pm

Thanks for this post, it is so helpful to see how these work on so many different bodies.
Thanks also for the chance to win a couple of patterns.

  45. Andrea says

    August 29, 2016 at 8:27 pm

They all look amazing, but think I would be most comfortable in the high rise style. I’m excited about making and wearing jeans from this pattern. Thanks for sharing!

  46. Belinda says

    August 29, 2016 at 8:22 pm

Yes ok now I will gird my guts/loins and go make a pair. Someone please tell Jenny she is an hourglass girl and should absolutely show off her shape…..

I wish I still had mine. Use it before you lose it and weep…………

  47. Carla Mayfield says

    August 29, 2016 at 8:17 pm

I would love to try these! I haven’t bought the patterns yet because I’m not sure I’m accomplished enough to make jeans. I’m sewing Colette Clovers right now and my seam ripper and I are inseparable! I will make these jeans someday, though!

  48. Mary P. Hall says

    August 29, 2016 at 8:15 pm

Dang, they all look so good!

  49. Tamara says

    August 29, 2016 at 8:07 pm

Just yesterday ,I was really reading over everything I could find about the Ginger jeans since so many have had great success. I think I’d like to try the Morgan jeans, however, only because I really dislike stretch denim! I know, call me weird, but I like my denim to be plain old 100% cotton!

  50. Patti says

    August 29, 2016 at 7:58 pm

Wow! These jeans look great on all of you. I would love to try to sew my own jeans this winter. Thanks for the inspiration. Off to Instagram to look at all the different versions.
