Same Pattern, Different Bodies: Ginger Jeans

August 29, 2016 by Tanya

Hello, readers!

Welcome to the next post in our ongoing series:  “Same Pattern, Different Bodies.”  Today, we’re taking a closer look at the Closet Case Ginger Jeans pattern.

The pattern description:

With a modern and flattering cut, Ginger Jeans are the daily staple you’ll reach for again and again. View A features a comfortable low rise with narrow stovepipe legs. View B is sexy and high-waisted with skinny legs and a tummy-slimming pocket stay.  Engineered to be as flattering as possible, Ginger Jeans feature subtly shaped back pockets to highlight the curve of the bum, slimming side seams and a higher back rise to prevent peekabooty. Designed for stretch denim, Ginger Jeans will hug you in all the right places.

Many of our CSC members have sewn their own Ginger Jeans with excellent results.

ginger jeans

Suzy

Suzy has made several pairs of Ginger jeans (including Ginger shorts!).

Tester version

  • Sewed these in size 18.
  • Added 1″ to the inner leg seam on the front pattern piece.
  • Added 1″ length at the knee.
  • Added 1″ to the center back height.
  • Adjusted the side seams, adding to the back and taking from the front.
  • Added a pocket stay.
  • Shaped the side seams to fit lower thighs and knee area.
  • Construction changes with the zipper and serged the waistband facing instead of turning under.
  • Shaped the waistband to be more curved to stop back gaping.
  • Added elastic to the waistband to help stabilize and stop it from stretching out.

ginger jeans4

Zippered version

  • Sewed these in size 18.
  • Added pull-on elastic waistband.
  • Added front zippers.
  • Added 1″ to inner leg seam on front.
  • Added a pocket stay.
  • Hyperextended calf adjustment.
  • Changed the shape of the front and back pockets.
  • Slimmed the calf from the knee down.

ginger jeans7

Gillian

Gillian has sewn several pairs of Ginger jeans and will no doubt sew up another fantastic version.

First denim pair

  • Added a covered elastic pull-on waistband – Here’s how!
  • Removed a wedge from back yoke.
  • Added a wedge at front waist.
  • Scooped out front crotch curve.
  • Lowered waist 1/2″.
  • Shortened at the ankle.
  • Skipped the fly.

gillian stretch denim

Cone Mills pair

  • Much the same as her previous pairs, but added a pocket stay.

gillian front back

Gillian says that she’s “still fiddling with a knock knee adjustment.”

Manju

Manju made a fabulous pair of Ginger jeans that she loves and finds them to be “comfortable, flattering and the perfect fit” for her.

Dark denim pair

  • Cut size 16 at waist, grading to 18 at the hips and tapering to 16 below the knees.
  • Removed 1″ from each leg from the calf up to the knee.
  • Removed 1″ from both inner and outer seams.
  • Pinched out 2″ from waistband and curved it.
  • Initially shortened the length by 2″, but ended up adding 1″ below the knee as she prefers her skinny jeans to be slightly gathered aroudn the lower calf.
  • Added a pocket stay.
  • Moved the back pockets towards the center back seam by 1″.
  • Scooped the front and back crotch out by 1/4″.

ginger jeans

Nicole

Nicole has made many pairs of Ginger jeans (+ shorts!) and loves sewing jeans.

Low-rise pair

  • Sewed a size 14.
  • Lengthened rise by 1″.
  • Small full calf adjustment.
  • Added a pocket stay.

ginger jeans6

High-waisted pair

  • Cut out size 16, going down to 14.
  • Took out a wedge along the back waistband and yoke.
  • Slimmed down the thighs, mostly taken out of the back thigh.

ginger jeans3

Jenny

Jenny is a huge fan of her Gingers and just recently sewed up another pair!

First pair

  • Started with the size 18.
  • Did a 3/4″ thin thighs adjustment.
  • Did a 1/4″ flat bum adjustment.
  • Adjusted seam allowances through the basting process.
  • Added pocket stay.

ginger jeans1

White pair

  • Much the same as the first pair, but after taking them at the side seams, went down to a size 16.

ginger jeans2

______________________________________________________________________________________________________

The Ginger Jeans pattern goes up to a size 20 (waist – 39″, hip – 48″), but many sewists who have sewn these jeans have stated that the pattern has a generous fit.  So if you’re out of the size range, you may be able to sew yourself a pair without grading up.  By basting the side seams, you can check the fit and see how it works for you.  Thankfully this pattern uses stretch denim, which can be more forgiving.

I’ve been considering sewing a pair ever since this pattern came out, but after putting this post together and reading more about the alterations and fit, sewing myself a pair of Gingers is definitely in my queue!

GIVEAWAY:  Closet Case Patterns has generously offered to give away a pattern bundle of both the Ginger Skinny Jeans and the Morgan Boyfriend Jeans to one lucky CSC reader!  To enter the random drawing, please leave a comment below by Monday, September 5, 2016 and tell us which version you’d make.

*UPDATE* The winner of the Ginger/Morgan jeans pattern bundle is Dovile.

Sewing my own jeans has been on my to-do list for a while now. I might just have to make myself sew it this autumn. I’d make Ginger Jeans as I love Jenny’s white pair!

I have not sewn jeans before. These jeans look wonderful. It looks like they would be easy to sew them. Maybe I’ll try them thanks.

I would love to try my hand at jeans. Particularly the ginger skinny high waisted version. I would also try the ginger flares hack as my favorite rtw jeans are high waist flares. All the tester versions are so great. Very inspiring.

I would like to make the boyfriend jeans!! Haven’t made myself jeans in quite a while. Would love the opportunity to sew some up again!

  4. Lizzie says

    August 29, 2016 at 7:47 pm

Great post! I would make both styles but the Ginger Skinny Jeans would be first cab off the rank!

This is the pattern that everyone seems to be raving about when it comes to jeans. I am out of the size range so haven’t tried them for this reason. I have made jeans before and with many patterns and for some reason or other I keep coming back to the Ginger jeans pattern picture to get an idea of how my jeans (from other patterns) should look like and fit. I really want to try these but I am out of the size range so will have to grade up and maybe just maybe I can have a really stellar fitting pair of jeans too.

  6. Lena says

I’d love to make the Ginger!

  7. Jennifer says

    August 29, 2016 at 7:18 pm

I’ve never sewn jeans before – I have thought that they would be too complicated to fit to my body. After seeing how amazing these jeans look on every body type, I totally want to give it a try now!! I want to try the skinny jeans.

  8. Kelley Camp says

    August 29, 2016 at 7:16 pm

Ahh! I’ve been wanting to make both pairs, though per suggestions the Ginger makes an easier first pair because of the stretchiness. LOVE the Mogans, though, and would love to have both in my closet!!

  9. Billie Thompson says

I would love to try the Ginger jean pattern.

I think I would love the Boyfriend jeans! I have accumulated enough denim and muslin that I should spend a weekend making a bunch of jeans. ?

I’d love to try making the Morgan Boyfriend Jeans pattern. Looks like amazing jeans!

  13. Debra Howard says

Fantastic article and giveaway. I am definitely past due for a pair of me-made jeans and will be thrilled if they turn out half as lovely as those posted.

  14. Irene Alcalde says

I love both patterns. And I want to make both . Probably I’d make fort thé Ginger’s

  15. Susan says

    August 29, 2016 at 6:48 pm

Everyone looks so great in their jeans! I love both patterns but have been too chicken to try making them yet. I think I would start with the Morgan jeans but I really think I will make both sooner or later.

  16. Junglewife says

    August 29, 2016 at 6:46 pm

I’d love to try making both kinds, but would probably make the Gingers first! What a great post!

  17. Anemone says

    August 29, 2016 at 6:31 pm

I’d love to give the Morgan jeans a try! I took my first foray into jeans making just a few months ago with some Gingers and was so happy with them. Have a non-stretch pair as well would be wonderful!

  18. Su says

    August 29, 2016 at 6:27 pm

Have the Ginger pattern but have not trialed them yet. As another commenter said, I’m thinking the Morgan style might be more friendly to age-morphing bodies.

  19. Margaret Koster says

    August 29, 2016 at 6:25 pm

Inspiring! So glad I have denim in my stash.

  20. Lisa says

    August 29, 2016 at 6:22 pm

I think I’d have to make the Morgan jeans first, but I once had a favorite pair of jean shorts that I think the high-waisted Ginger might just let me replicate…

  21. Nevada Grace says

    August 29, 2016 at 6:13 pm

I’d definitely choose the Morgan boyfriend jeans. I like sewing with nonstretch denim. Of course if I sew these, I would need to sew a red gingham shirt to go with.

  22. Anne says

    August 29, 2016 at 6:01 pm

I’d make high waisted Gingers. I’ve made a pair of jeans bit not for me – these would be for me. Slightly intimidated by all the fit changes required. Thanks for the giveaway. Fingers crossed!

  23. Deborah Amos says

    August 29, 2016 at 5:54 pm

Oh I love these jeans! Everyone did a fabulous job. They look great!

  24. Roxanne Guillemette says

    August 29, 2016 at 5:50 pm

I have neem eyeing the ginger pattern for awhile, but i’m a bit scared, as this would be my first attempt at pants! Maybe this would be the kick in the pants (no pun intended) I need to go ahead!

  25. raquel from JC says

    August 29, 2016 at 5:47 pm

I looove the high waisted version, Thanks for the chance to win this pattern!

  26. Sassy says

Ginger Jeans are the one for me
Can’t believe, the patterns going free
Ready mades are hard to find
The stress it causes, is messin with my mind

  27. Di says

    August 29, 2016 at 5:42 pm

I basically want to copy exactly what Manju did because I love the way they fit her!

  28. Karen Lyles says

    August 29, 2016 at 5:42 pm

I would probably make low rise Ginger Jeans. My high waist is at boob level! :O

  29. Pam says

    August 29, 2016 at 5:39 pm

I’d love to try the Ginger jeans. They look great on everyone. But, I don’t know what will get me out of my sewing slump. My machines are crying.

  30. Debbie Lauzon says

    August 29, 2016 at 5:24 pm

I have some nice stretch denim ready for these jeans!

  31. Melita says

    August 29, 2016 at 5:23 pm

I would love to do some selfish sewing and make thr ginger pair for myself. Little intimidated by all the changes the girls have made though

  32. Cheryl Gray says

    August 29, 2016 at 5:15 pm

Not sure which I would make – my favorite jeans have a fit somewhere between the Morgan and the Ginger so maybe I’d end up with a mash-up of the two!

Thanks for both the comparison and the giveaway.

  33. Kristie says

    August 29, 2016 at 5:15 pm

Can’t wait to make the Morgan Boyfriend Jean!

  34. Carol says

  35. Nellie says

    August 29, 2016 at 5:02 pm

I think the Ginger Jeans are the greatest! And I love sewing with stretch denim. So, that is my choice. Can’t wait to get started!

  36. Naomi says

    August 29, 2016 at 5:01 pm

Oh boy! If love to try the ginger pattern! I’ve heard so much about it and this post has given me confidence that I can do it!!

  37. Mel says

    August 29, 2016 at 4:58 pm

Thanks for this post – it’s really valuable to see how the jeans look on different people. I’d have a go at the Gingers first, I think, but definitely interested in trying both.

  38. Lisa says

    August 29, 2016 at 4:58 pm

I’m especially encouraged by Manju! If I can make the pattern my multiple sizes going down, I’d own the first pair of jeans to ever fit me properly! I want to try this! 😀

  39. Peggy says

    August 29, 2016 at 4:58 pm

I love both pair bit I’d probably make the Morgan’s. I love a boyfriend Jean.

  40. Terri says

    August 29, 2016 at 4:55 pm

I have wanted to try the Ginger Jean pattern since it was released.

  41. Nancy Hinson says

    August 29, 2016 at 4:47 pm

Haven’t had a well fitted pair of jeans in a long time. Morgan looks it might be more wearer friendly for a mature figure. Would love to give it a try.

  42. Cheryl says

    August 29, 2016 at 4:43 pm

Both inspired and intimidated by the idea of sewing myself jeans. This post pushes me back towards team Inspired!

  43. Jenny says

    August 29, 2016 at 4:42 pm

I would definitely go for the Ginger jeans, every version I’ve seen looks lovely!

  44. Mariah/knitmo says

The ginger jeans is one pattern that looks fantastic on every body I’ve seen. It also gives me confidence I can tackle them — I just need to get time to get pattern, adjust the fit and wear the most fantastic pair of jeans Evah!

I have places for both versions on my wardrobe, including a mod so I can have a skinny jean with a boot cut for my boots on the farm.

I’ve got plans to make the Morgan’s and a new pair of the straight Gingers.

Everyone’s jeans seem so fine, and look so good on each person. At the moment…inspired by the white jeans.

  49. Hannah says

    August 29, 2016 at 4:31 pm

Thanks si much for this comparison!

I would go for the Morgan pattern for casual comfort, but I’m so curious to challenge myself with the Ginger pattern. If it came down to it, it would be the Ginger pattern.

Mastering jeans is on my fall withlist!

  50. Masha says

    August 29, 2016 at 4:27 pm

The low-waisted stovepipe Ginger is already on my fall sewing list! Now I want to make a green fitted sweater like Jenny’s to go with them.
