Same Pattern, Different Bodies: Ginger Jeans

August 29, 2016 by Tanya

Hello, readers!

Welcome to the next post in our ongoing series:  “Same Pattern, Different Bodies.”  Today, we’re taking a closer look at the Closet Case Ginger Jeans pattern.

The pattern description:

With a modern and flattering cut, Ginger Jeans are the daily staple you’ll reach for again and again. View A features a comfortable low rise with narrow stovepipe legs. View B is sexy and high-waisted with skinny legs and a tummy-slimming pocket stay.  Engineered to be as flattering as possible, Ginger Jeans feature subtly shaped back pockets to highlight the curve of the bum, slimming side seams and a higher back rise to prevent peekabooty. Designed for stretch denim, Ginger Jeans will hug you in all the right places.

Many of our CSC members have sewn their own Ginger Jeans with excellent results.

ginger jeans

Suzy

Suzy has made several pairs of Ginger jeans (including Ginger shorts!).

Tester version

  • Sewed these in size 18.
  • Added 1″ to the inner leg seam on the front pattern piece.
  • Added 1″ length at the knee.
  • Added 1″ to the center back height.
  • Adjusted the side seams, adding to the back and taking from the front.
  • Added a pocket stay.
  • Shaped the side seams to fit lower thighs and knee area.
  • Construction changes with the zipper and serged the waistband facing instead of turning under.
  • Shaped the waistband to be more curved to stop back gaping.
  • Added elastic to the waistband to help stabilize and stop it from stretching out.

ginger jeans4

Zippered version

  • Sewed these in size 18.
  • Added pull-on elastic waistband.
  • Added front zippers.
  • Added 1″ to inner leg seam on front.
  • Added a pocket stay.
  • Hyperextended calf adjustment.
  • Changed the shape of the front and back pockets.
  • Slimmed the calf from the knee down.

ginger jeans7

Gillian

Gillian has sewn several pairs of Ginger jeans and will no doubt sew up another fantastic version.

First denim pair

  • Added a covered elastic pull-on waistband – Here’s how!
  • Removed a wedge from back yoke.
  • Added a wedge at front waist.
  • Scooped out front crotch curve.
  • Lowered waist 1/2″.
  • Shortened at the ankle.
  • Skipped the fly.

gillian stretch denim

Cone Mills pair

  • Much the same as her previous pairs, but added a pocket stay.

gillian front back

Gillian says that she’s “still fiddling with a knock knee adjustment.”

Manju

Manju made a fabulous pair of Ginger jeans that she loves and finds them to be “comfortable, flattering and the perfect fit” for her.

Dark denim pair

  • Cut size 16 at waist, grading to 18 at the hips and tapering to 16 below the knees.
  • Removed 1″ from each leg from the calf up to the knee.
  • Removed 1″ from both inner and outer seams.
  • Pinched out 2″ from waistband and curved it.
  • Initially shortened the length by 2″, but ended up adding 1″ below the knee as she prefers her skinny jeans to be slightly gathered aroudn the lower calf.
  • Added a pocket stay.
  • Moved the back pockets towards the center back seam by 1″.
  • Scooped the front and back crotch out by 1/4″.

ginger jeans

Nicole

Nicole has made many pairs of Ginger jeans (+ shorts!) and loves sewing jeans.

Low-rise pair

  • Sewed a size 14.
  • Lengthened rise by 1″.
  • Small full calf adjustment.
  • Added a pocket stay.

ginger jeans6

High-waisted pair

  • Cut out size 16, going down to 14.
  • Took out a wedge along the back waistband and yoke.
  • Slimmed down the thighs, mostly taken out of the back thigh.

ginger jeans3

Jenny

Jenny is a huge fan of her Gingers and just recently sewed up another pair!

First pair

  • Started with the size 18.
  • Did a 3/4″ thin thighs adjustment.
  • Did a 1/4″ flat bum adjustment.
  • Adjusted seam allowances through the basting process.
  • Added pocket stay.

ginger jeans1

White pair

  • Much the same as the first pair, but after taking them at the side seams, went down to a size 16.

ginger jeans2

______________________________________________________________________________________________________

The Ginger Jeans pattern goes up to a size 20 (waist – 39″, hip – 48″), but many sewists who have sewn these jeans have stated that the pattern has a generous fit.  So if you’re out of the size range, you may be able to sew yourself a pair without grading up.  By basting the side seams, you can check the fit and see how it works for you.  Thankfully this pattern uses stretch denim, which can be more forgiving.

I’ve been considering sewing a pair ever since this pattern came out, but after putting this post together and reading more about the alterations and fit, sewing myself a pair of Gingers is definitely in my queue!

GIVEAWAY:  Closet Case Patterns has generously offered to give away a pattern bundle of both the Ginger Skinny Jeans and the Morgan Boyfriend Jeans to one lucky CSC reader!  To enter the random drawing, please leave a comment below by Monday, September 5, 2016 and tell us which version you’d make.

*UPDATE* The winner of the Ginger/Morgan jeans pattern bundle is Dovile.

Sewing my own jeans has been on my to-do list for a while now. I might just have to make myself sew it this autumn. I’d make Ginger Jeans as I love Jenny’s white pair!

I would make the high-waisted, flared gingers. Although I really, really want to make a pair of Morgan’s too.

I’d make both patterns, andid then many more of the best fitting.

I’ve been watching this pattern for a while now. I’m recently returning to sewing. After a successful sew of the Cashmerette tank top (I love it) and the T-shirt cut (but not yet sewn) I’m regaining my sewing confidence. Jeans may need to be my next success story, as my RTW jeans have a horrible fit. I’d make the Morgan jeans, I think, first.

Would be great to get on the jeans train – i would try the morgan jeans – i like things a bit slouchy.

  5. Nita says

Thank you for this post! Now I see that I, too, can look okay in jeans ( which I havn’t worn in years). I would make BOTH versions, but probably start with the skinny leg version.

  6. Cindy Charlton says

I think I would like the Morgan jeans, but the Ginger jeans do look good on all the models.

Sewing jeans has always been outside of my comfort zone, but I would like to try the Ginger skinny jeans!

My husband prefers the Ginger Style, bt I know I will wear the Morgans more often…..

I would love to win this pattern. Have not sewn jeans yet ( a little intimidated), but now there would not be any excuse!

I just finished making my first pair of Ginger jeans, and I love the way they turned out! They were so much fun to make. I’d love to try the Morgan pattern next.

Oh, yes! First Morgan, then Ginger (A). And for my daughter first place Ginger (B). Thank You.

I am inspired. Since everyone seems to be so happy with the Ginger Jeans pattern I would love the opportunity to give it a try. Thanks for the chance.

These all look great. I am not a fan of ankle hugging pants, but I have been eye-ing the ginger flares and morgan jeans and great possibilities for wardrobe staples.

It’s so so so useful to see the pattern made up on different women! Thank you. I would make the low-rise option. What a great pattern.

All of the girls look amazing, but I specificaly love the white jeans. Very classy.

  16. Lori says

    August 29, 2016 at 3:41 pm

I would make the Morgan jeans first, then the Gingers.

  17. Anna M.V.H. says

    August 29, 2016 at 3:37 pm

A picture is indeed worth a thousand words!

I always have to compromise the fit of jeans due to a flat bum, large waist, short-ish rise and slim thighs, and seeing Jenny’s success with the Ginger Skinny Jeans gives me hope for finally owning a pair of properly fitting jeans one day.

Thank you CSC for the “Same Pattern, Different Bodies” series!!! <3

Love this pattern and I am going to have to add it to my collection. I started making my own jeans last year–I’m a tall curvy plus size and it’s impossible to find jeans that fit. After much testing I finally got to a point where I am happy with the results. Now, the challenge is finding great denim with a little stretch and at a reasonable price.

  22. Marianne says

Very convincing, girls! Would love to try the high waisted Ginger jeans after seeing this gallery!

Ladies…fabulous job i love seeking how everyone treated this pattern. Heck i just Love this pattern I have had my eye on it for a while! I want to make a great pair( or 4) of the skinnies with many incarnations after!!

  24. Rebecca says

I have been wanting to make Ginger Jeans for the longest time! I would definitely make the low rise version first. This post is so great, really shows the versatility of the pattern, thank you!

  25. Carol says

I think that the Ginger skinny jeans may be in my future. I would love to try again to fit myself. I would love to outwit this large belly and try to fit some comfortable jeans.

It would have to be the skinny for me, I can’t imagine jeans without stretch! Although nothing to say I couldn’t do the boyfriend ones in stretch!

Love all the different real sized ladies trying out the pattern and love the way they all fit. Might have to have a go myself as I always struggle finding good fitting jeans x

I would love to make a skinny ginger high waisted version? I’m outside the size range but your review makes me think I just might be able to squeeze myself into a pair without grading up!

I’m so glad you did this pattern for the different body types! I have only tried pants (mostly unsucessfully) a few times but have been wanting to try these. I think I would try Morgan first and then see if I couldn’t figure out Ginger.

  33. Sherrell says

    August 29, 2016 at 3:15 pm

All of the ladies jeans look great! Finding a pair of decent fitting jeans is a BIG issue for me…this shoujld be my project.

  34. Regan Louise says

    August 29, 2016 at 3:15 pm

I would love to try to make boyfriend jeans, but taper the legs in a bit at the ankle as I think they rather resemble straight leg there which is unflattering on me ! Lately I’ve been wearing skinnies that are too big and resemble boyfriend jeans anyway, haha. Good use for hand-me-downs !

  35. Ann says

    August 29, 2016 at 3:15 pm

It’s so difficult to find jeans that fit just right (and have the type of material your want!) I’d love to try either one of these patterns (although I’m leaning toward the Morgans)- thanks for the inspiration and example that it CAN be done!

  36. Adrianne Caldwell says

    August 29, 2016 at 3:13 pm

I would like to try sewing the boyfriend jeans!

  37. Donna H says

High waisted Gingers definitely! No more pulling them up every 5 minutes

  38. Karen C says

    August 29, 2016 at 3:12 pm

I think I’d make the Morgan jeans because I have lots of non-stretch denim in my stash that I need to use up.

  39. Julie Baker Phillips says

I think I have seen everyone’s individually, but its great to see them all together here! I’m been thinking about getting this pattern but haven’t pulled the trigger yet. I would definitely make the gingers, skinny leg/ high waist first, but I think i would have to try both versions out.
