In some parts of the world, there is a chill in the air and that means coats and jackets are in season! Raphaëlle from the French indie pattern company Ready to Sew reached out to us and asked us if we’d like to try out some of her new patterns with her newly extended sizing. Check out our Curvy Sew Collective post for the Ready to Sew Patsy Overalls and now we are happy to bring you a look into the Pekka Jacket.
Pekka takes its inspiration from traditional Japanese clothing. It is an oversized mid-season jacket with wide armholes and a simplified jacket lining. With slightly cropped sleeves and gaping pockets, this stylish jacket is perfect for layering and an ideal sew for motivated beginners.
The Pekka Jacket is available in two size ranges. Range 2, for curvy sewists, starts with a 42.3″ (107.5 cm) bust and goes up to a 54.7″ (139 cm) bust and drafted for a D-cup:
Andie
Measurements: High Bust 44″; Bust 51″; Bra size 44HH; Waist 48″; Hips 53″; Height 5’3″
Pattern size: 54 (with the narrower front band)
Fabric: Cotton canvas, cotton linen canvas, and linen
Alterations: None
Fit: It’s meant to be oversized and fits that way. It’s a great fit!
Changes for future versions: None
Final thoughts: The pattern instructions were pretty easy to follow. There is a sewalong on their website too! It’s such a great jacket and fabric choice can really change the whole look. I love the panels. Made it easy to use all my linen and cotton scraps that I keep from old projects. The only new bits of linen were the green and turquoise. I really want to try out a sweatshirt fleece after reading Martha’s review. 😉 I think it’s a great pattern and I will definitely be making more in the future.
Martha
Measurements: High Bust – 47″, Bust –50″, Bra Size – 44DDD, Waist – 47″, Hips – 61″, Height – 5’6″.
Pattern Size: Size 52, View 2
Fabric and Alterations: Sweatshirt Fleece and lined in Ankara Wax Cotton from my personal fabric store, I mean stash 🥴. I made no alterations to my pattern pieces as it is an oversized jacket with a lot of ease built in. I did add the pocket pieces to the lining and therefore it is wearable on both sides.
Fit: The fit is as intended. Oversized and cozy because of the sweatshirt fleece I chose to use. I utilized the finished measurements provided by the pattern to gauge how oversized I really wanted the garment to fit on me.
Changes for future versions: None
Final thoughts: After I made my jacket, I swear it had to be one of the coldest nights in my house during the holiday season and I pretty much lived in this jacket for about 4 days straight. I originally intended to have this as a neutral addition to my wardrobe and have the Ankara lining be the accent to the look but I find myself wearing it with the Ankara lining side out more and have gotten soooo many compliments when I wear it outside.
The only issue I had with the pattern is that if you print the A0 pattern, some pattern pieces are overlapped and require you to do some tracing. I am not a member of #TeamTrace and this pattern sat until I was able to print and tape those pattern pieces to complete my jacket. The designer does note this is in the instructions and offers to provide the extra required pieces. How that is done? I am not sure but keep that in mind. A0 printing is not cheap and I understand the need to try to reduce the number of pages one would need to print but I would encourage the designer to revist the A0 layout and not overlap pieces.
Overall, I love the design lines of this pattern. I think it’s awesome that this pattern gives you an opportunity to try all kinds of fabric for different looks. I was sooooo tempted to colorblock the jacket with all the sweatshirt fleece in my stash and after seeing Andie’s version, it is the perfect motivation to make it happen sooner than later.

I like both jackets a lot. The Ankara fabric is gorgeous. This pattern really looks great with colorful fabric and the color-blocking version is also lovely. Very well done!

Great pattern. I ordered it after seeing this review. It’s perfect for spring where I live. I love the fabrics you’ve both used, and these look great on both of you.. Good pattern for color blocking. Thanks for the great reviews!

These are really cute! I wouldn’t have considered using the sweatshirt fleece with the woven. That is such a great idea! I love the way you’ve created such a usable piece of clothing. Thanks to both of you for sharing.

Overlap like Burda? Like two pieces printed in top of each other? We’re they in layers? OTHERWISE awesome jackets – both.
Martha says
Yes just like Burda! It’s not the whole pattern but some pieces. Tracing is probably one of the biggest reasons I have never done any of the great patterns in my Burda magazines..lol

You both look fabulously cozy in your jackets! I truly would not have even looked at this pattern based on the designer’s pic tbh.

I just really love this coatigan style. I’m on an extended stay in Florida and see the value of these toppers. Thanks you two for showing us how this pattern looks.

That jacket looks great on you! And since you and I are alike in size, I’m putting that jacket on my “to sew” list!
