Pattern Name: SBCC Harvey Shirt (and dress!). This pattern comes with a shirt, tunic, and dress view with two sleeve options. It has a relaxed fit and a classic shirt details.
Size Range: SBCC Patterns are drafted for petites and come in a good size range, from 00-28W. Betsy, the designer behind SBCC Patterns, works professionally in the garment industry, so you can expect lots of detailed measurements (like below) and very high quality drafting.
What size did you make: Although I am not petite, I am very short waisted, so I’ve had a lot of luck with petite patterns on my top half. I made an 18-20-22 with 2″ length added to the sleeve length.
What are your measurements, height, and body type? Bust: 45″, Waist 42″, Hip 53″, representing team pear! I am 5’7″ but short waisted.
What adjustments did you make and how long did they take? This is a tester version of the pattern, so the only alteration I made was to add 2″ to the sleeve length after measuring the flat pattern against my body. I have send gone back and added a bit of extra width to the sleeve and dropped the armscye a bit as a result. These modifications were made to the pattern before it was finalized, but it doesn’t hurt to check sleeve width and the armscye depth, especially if you aren’t truly petite (like myself).
What fabric did you use? Riley Blake double gauze from Hip Stitch, buttons purchased locally
What was the construction process like? Did the instructions make sense to you? SBCC patterns are notoriously light on directions, but Betsy stepped them up a bit for this pattern. I don’t think it would be great for beginners, but they were thorough enough for me as an intermediate sewist to sew my first button front shirt without any major issues. And if you’ve already sewn a shirt, it shouldn’t be any issue! There aren’t a ton of words, but the diagrams are great. Just make sure you are on top of when you want to finish seams and other little details like that.
How do you like the pattern’s fit? Do you think the design works well for your particular body shape? I am super THRILLED with the fit of this pattern. I’m glad I waited until a petite patter was available make a button front shirt, because I think it I had tried it with any of the other available plus size patterns out there, I would have run into a lot of fit issues. The other think I love about this pattern is the relaxed fit, I have a very casual lifestyle and this works great for me! It reminds me of the very popular Grainline Archer, except it comes in my size.
Will you make the pattern again? If so, what fit or design changes will you make? I really, really want to make the dress version of this pattern, I love the fun pocket details that are included. I think I will cut the same size through the body, but will probably go up a size in the armscye and sleeve so the I have a better fit through the bicep.
Overall, I give this pattern two huge thumbs up! If you would like to see more, you can check out the post on my blog about the pattern or the Harvey Shirt tester roundup on the SBCC Blog. There is also a sew along on the SBCC blog. Just keep in mind that this pattern is drafted for petites, so if you are average to long though the torso it may not be for you unless you are willing to make a few adjustments. Details are included in the sew along on how to lengthen the pattern if you are an average height.
Size Range: 5
Instructions: 3 (the instructions are brief but accurate. There is a sew along which should help fill in the gaps)
Construction Process: 5
Final Fit: 5 (because the bicep issue has been corrected in the final pattern)
Overall Rating: 4.5

I love the shirt and think you did a great job! This is exactly the kind of pattern I’m looking for, unfortunately because I’m tall and plus, I’m doubtful it would work for me. I used to make the majority of my clothes but really haven’t sewn in years. But inspiration like this might get me sewing again!

Thank you Betty. I hope you do get sewing again! If you are feeling adventuresome, the sew along does include the exact information you need to lengthen the pattern, but I totally understand that might be more than you want to deal with when getting back into sewing.

Hi Betty,
I, too, am a tall plus size. I haven’t made this pattern yet, but I have sewn other SBCC patterns and they’re pretty easy to lengthen. I think you should go for it. Find some nice cheap fabric to test the pattern on (I don’t do muslins – if the pattern turns out great I want something I can wear. If it turns out awful, I’m not out much money and I can still mark up the cheap fabric.) Good luck!

For those interested there was a “sew along” on this pattern that may still be available on the blog.
Megan says
Ah, yes, thank you Theresa. I though I had linked to it in the post but it looks like i just mentioned it and forgot the link. It is on the SBCC blog.

Thank you for your review. I have tried the Cashmerette Harrison and I needed to make a petite adjustment. Great shirt!

You’re welcome, Janet! It seems like this pattern is a real hidden gem, so I wanted to be sure to post about ut
