One of the best parts of our sewing community is sewing together!
The idea of our sewalongs on the Curvy Sewing Collective is to sew a theme and let you choose your own pattern to fit into that theme.
We will show you what we are sewing and offer tips and tricks along the way.
At the end of our sewalong, we’ll showcase all of our fabulous garments and offer up some prizes!
Right now, we’re trying to decide which theme to use for our first sewalong and that’s where you come in.
Vote for your choice in our handy dandy poll:
If you have ideas for future sewalongs, please let us know and we can look into it for the future.

All three would be useful additions to my wardrobe, but I voted grading up. There’s too few cute things available in my size range and I’ve got the Laurel burning a hole in my metaphorical pocket.

This sounds so much more fun than doing school stuff! I many have to be more efficient at school so I can sew!
Jen says
I voted for grading up a top, but all 3 sounds great…and I especially love the suggestion someone made about doing pants, too. I am terrible at fitting pants and have sworn off them, so a sew-along would be fab. Thanks for this great site!
Sabrina says
This would be great to participate in since I just started to blog my sewing adventures! I would love the pencil skirt and fitting around the abdomen would be such a great technique to master. Whatever it will be I can wait for the reveal as well as the suggestions!

Hoping the wrap wins, so I picked up Simp 1653 at the Hancock’s 99c sale today. I have the non-cup sizes of this pattern … too lazy to look up number and also too lazy to do a FBA when it’s already been done for 99c. Haha. I love raglan sleeves and have been wanting to make the original version for a while now.
Sophie-Lee says
Looks like it’s in a clear lead at the moment!
Nakia says
I voted for a pencil skirt sew-along because that’s what my wardrobe is completely lacking in but I’m excited at the thought of a wrap dress sew-along as well! Lingerie would be fun to sew too! I just gave pattern grading a shot for the first time with an Ohhh Lulu pattern and I’m praying it goes well.
Allison says
I voted for the wrap dress, but I admit to being totally biased in this case since I just started sewing up a faux wrap dress last night for a friend’s wedding. (plus if I keep on accidentally clipping holes in the middle of pattern pieces or sewing the wrong sides together I might still be working on this when the sew-along starts! I should probably stop mixing wine and sewing.)
tanyamaile says
It looks like it’s going to be the wrap dress! Wine and sewing! Good times! 🙂
Gwen Gyldenege says
Finally! A sew along with my tribe! I would love to do
– a Jeans Sew Along
– even help host an Athletic wear sew along – leggings, sports bra, bra top, wicking something or other…
– Dress sew along – something like a cocktail dress like Susan Khalje’s pattern or similar – lace overlay
– BRAS!!!!!!!!! and Undies!
tanyamaile says
Great ideas, Gwen!!! I especially like the lingerie and jeans as those are two areas I have not delved into before… although I have the patterns and fabrics and notions to do so!
Vanessa says
Aww, I was really looking forward to making a pencil skirt for this, but it looks like it’s losing in the polls. No matter! I’ll be happy sewing something for either of the other categories!
tanyamaile says
No worries! I’m sure we’ll be doing all of those topics sometime in the future!
Beansmarie says
This sounds like fun. Do you need to be an expert sewist to participate? I’ve never done a sew along before , but I’d love to try.
tanyamaile says
Anyone can participate, regardless of skill level. 🙂
Jeanne Marie says
I finished a wrap dress not long ago. The full-bust adjustment wasn’t as tricky as I thought it might be. There were some interesting pleats nearby. http://jmsewingstudio.com/2014/06/10/coral-wrap-dress-update/
Jo says
Difficult choice, but for me the wrap edges it. Comfortable if you get it right but a complete embarrassment otherwise. But they will all be useful!
tanyamaile says
There’s nothing worse than a wrap dress, a strong wind and a wardrobe malfunction!
Ronda Bowen says
Oh, this should be a lot of fun. I look forward to seeing what’s chosen!
Suzanne says
I voted for the pencil skirt. I can’t seem to get the tummy and hips fit at the same time! I see it’s behind in the polls so I am glad to hear that all of them will probably be addressed. Thanks.
Rhonda Atkinson says
I’m with Suzanne-I have issues trying to decide how to deal with the protruding stomach. I find it much easier to adjust patterns for others than I can for myself.
Mary Danielson Perry says
Despite which one wins, we can definitely add a pencil skirt tummy adjustment to our posting schedule anyhow. That’s a really common fit issue for curvy women, myself included. It’s such an easy, but helpful adjustment to get the hang of!
Suzanne says
That would be much appreciated! My problem seems to be if I get the hips to fit and look smooth, then there are tummy pulls. But if I add fabric for the tummy pulls, then there is too much fabric in the hips and it’s really not a pencil skirt anymore. And oh, how I long for a pencil skirt!
hannahs says
They all sound like wonderful ideas; it was tricky to choose one!
Faustina says
Oh! Please do a pants sewalong at some point in the future. Some thing simple like Style Arc Elle Pants, or the Tessuti Anita Ponte pants. You know, no zippers but still a nice versatile shape. I have yet to get a well fitting muslin.
carlalissa says
Whatever the pattern is…I do not care….. I am IN!!! thank you very much!
Paige @ Lux Per Diem says
My vote is for grading up a top! That would be super helpful for me as most of my super cute vintage tops are in less than curve friendly sizes!
Cathi says
I love the idea of a sew along with lots of hints/help.
Will there be Curvy pattern suggestions to go along? I’ve never done a wrap anything or a pencil skirt!
tanyamaile says
Yes! We’ll definitely offer up many pattern suggestions. I, myself, have never found a wrap dress or top that works for me, so it would be great to find ones that do! (No, I would not be running the “wrap-along”….)
Melinda says
Petites Plus has a lovely wrap top. In this case, the bust will be taken care of for curvy women & if you are taller, you’ll just have to lengthen the torso and sleeve length.
Jenny says
If the wrap along wins – which I’ll be leading – then I definitely have some good recommendations for you!
Caz J says
Does a ‘faux’ wrap count as a wrap dress, something like the Cake patterns Tiramisu I wonder? If not I’m definitely up for tackling a ‘proper’ wrap dress.
Sophie-Lee says
Although I don’t think I’d even call the tiramisu a faux wrap dress, I say sew along with whatever pattern you like! And hopefully we’ll have some tips that will help you brave a real wrap dress one day 🙂
Caz J says
well the front bit wraps! But yeah fair enough 😀
Caz J says
I meant the ‘front bodice’ bit, bah can’t edit own post.
splendidcakes says
I think this is a great idea! I had a hard time choosing, though… I had to tell myself I wasn’t deciding (or helping to decide) the fate of humanity 🙂
Jan, who tends who over think things
tanyamaile says
If it makes you feel any better, I imagine that we’ll be doing all of them eventually!
Megan@TheGreenViolet says
oooh, yay!! all sound fun!
tanyamaile says
I know! I love a sewalong!!!
michelleinsea says
Wow, it’s fairly even so far (with one category slightly ahead of the others). Anyway, I love this idea. I’ve done a few sewalongs before, but they were always pattern-specific (and always coincided with a new pattern release). This should be fun!
tanyamaile says
Yes, this way we choose what we want! Especially since many of us have a lot of patterns in our stashes to choose from already.
Francesca says
I love these theme-a-longs. I participate in The Monthly Stitch now and again, though not as often as I plan to. It seems to me that the most successful themes are fairly broad.
tanyamaile says
I love the Monthly Stitch as well! It just seems that I never get them done as I’m sewing up other stuff!
