Hello, readers!
Welcome to the next post in our ongoing series: “Same Pattern, Different Bodies.” Today, we’re taking a closer look at the Closet Case Ginger Jeans pattern.
The pattern description:
With a modern and flattering cut, Ginger Jeans are the daily staple you’ll reach for again and again. View A features a comfortable low rise with narrow stovepipe legs. View B is sexy and high-waisted with skinny legs and a tummy-slimming pocket stay. Engineered to be as flattering as possible, Ginger Jeans feature subtly shaped back pockets to highlight the curve of the bum, slimming side seams and a higher back rise to prevent peekabooty. Designed for stretch denim, Ginger Jeans will hug you in all the right places.
Many of our CSC members have sewn their own Ginger Jeans with excellent results.
Suzy has made several pairs of Ginger jeans (including Ginger shorts!).
- Sewed these in size 18.
- Added 1″ to the inner leg seam on the front pattern piece.
- Added 1″ length at the knee.
- Added 1″ to the center back height.
- Adjusted the side seams, adding to the back and taking from the front.
- Added a pocket stay.
- Shaped the side seams to fit lower thighs and knee area.
- Construction changes with the zipper and serged the waistband facing instead of turning under.
- Shaped the waistband to be more curved to stop back gaping.
- Added elastic to the waistband to help stabilize and stop it from stretching out.
- Sewed these in size 18.
- Added pull-on elastic waistband.
- Added front zippers.
- Added 1″ to inner leg seam on front.
- Added a pocket stay.
- Hyperextended calf adjustment.
- Changed the shape of the front and back pockets.
- Slimmed the calf from the knee down.
Gillian has sewn several pairs of Ginger jeans and will no doubt sew up another fantastic version.
- Added a covered elastic pull-on waistband – Here’s how!
- Removed a wedge from back yoke.
- Added a wedge at front waist.
- Scooped out front crotch curve.
- Lowered waist 1/2″.
- Shortened at the ankle.
- Skipped the fly.
- Much the same as her previous pairs, but added a pocket stay.
Gillian says that she’s “still fiddling with a knock knee adjustment.”
Manju made a fabulous pair of Ginger jeans that she loves and finds them to be “comfortable, flattering and the perfect fit” for her.
- Cut size 16 at waist, grading to 18 at the hips and tapering to 16 below the knees.
- Removed 1″ from each leg from the calf up to the knee.
- Removed 1″ from both inner and outer seams.
- Pinched out 2″ from waistband and curved it.
- Initially shortened the length by 2″, but ended up adding 1″ below the knee as she prefers her skinny jeans to be slightly gathered aroudn the lower calf.
- Added a pocket stay.
- Moved the back pockets towards the center back seam by 1″.
- Scooped the front and back crotch out by 1/4″.
Nicole has made many pairs of Ginger jeans (+ shorts!) and loves sewing jeans.
- Sewed a size 14.
- Lengthened rise by 1″.
- Small full calf adjustment.
- Added a pocket stay.
- Cut out size 16, going down to 14.
- Took out a wedge along the back waistband and yoke.
- Slimmed down the thighs, mostly taken out of the back thigh.
Jenny is a huge fan of her Gingers and just recently sewed up another pair!
- Started with the size 18.
- Did a 3/4″ thin thighs adjustment.
- Did a 1/4″ flat bum adjustment.
- Adjusted seam allowances through the basting process.
- Added pocket stay.
- Much the same as the first pair, but after taking them at the side seams, went down to a size 16.

The Ginger Jeans pattern goes up to a size 20 (waist – 39″, hip – 48″), but many sewists who have sewn these jeans have stated that the pattern has a generous fit. So if you’re out of the size range, you may be able to sew yourself a pair without grading up. By basting the side seams, you can check the fit and see how it works for you. Thankfully this pattern uses stretch denim, which can be more forgiving.
I’ve been considering sewing a pair ever since this pattern came out, but after putting this post together and reading more about the alterations and fit, sewing myself a pair of Gingers is definitely in my queue!
GIVEAWAY: Closet Case Patterns has generously offered to give away a pattern bundle of both the Ginger Skinny Jeans and the Morgan Boyfriend Jeans to one lucky CSC reader! To enter the random drawing, please leave a comment below by Monday, September 5, 2016 and tell us which version you’d make.
*UPDATE* The winner of the Ginger/Morgan jeans pattern bundle is Dovile.
Sewing my own jeans has been on my to-do list for a while now. I might just have to make myself sew it this autumn. I’d make Ginger Jeans as I love Jenny’s white pair!

I would love to make the Ginger jeans – low rise with narrow legs. I really admire how detailed Closet Case Files are with adjustment instructions. I’ve never made jeans before but have plans to find a great pattern to try in the future.

Thanks for this round up! I especially love Jenny’s white jeans but I think I’d made the Morgan’s for myself if I had to choose between the two. Love these two jeans patterns…some day! It’s on the wish list ?
JessieRoo says
Dark wash skinny jeans are a mainstay in my wardrobe, but it’s so hard to find ones that fit and stay up on my relatively un-curvy body, so I’d go with the high-waisted version of the Gingers for a first attempt.
