Halloween Costumes Made Easy

Halloween is coming soon and all around the sewing world I’ve seen many people getting to work on their costumes. Many members of the Curvy Sewing Collective are tackling more complicated projects, but Halloween sewing doesn’t have to be difficult. A quick look through some of the CSC’s favorite Tried N’ True patterns can give you great basic shapes that can be molded into many popular costume ideas!

Wonder Woman

With the movie release last summer, Wonder Woman has made a huge comeback to the cosplay and costume scene. Patterns for Pirates Sweetheart Dress is a great fit for the neckline of Wonder Woman’s bustier while also providing coverage for the cool nights that often come along with the Halloween. I was able to find red stretch and mesh material at many shops like Fabric.com and JoAnn’s. The star print fabric was also easy to find at JoAnn’s and Spandex World.

Wizard of Oz

Dorthy has been a favorite Halloween costume ever since the movie premiered in 1939. This is a costume where the fabric really carries the look and was available at JoAnn’s and many online retailers. Gingham is so classic! Add a dog in a basket as your accessory and you’ll be all set! Cashmerette’s Upton nicely mimics the style of Dorothy’s dress and once you ditch the dog and pigtails this is a costume you could keep on wearing after the holiday’s over.

Cat Woman/Sandy from Grease/Black Widow

There are lots of costumes that start as basic black clothing. This is a great opportunity to make a couple of items for your capsule wardrobe that can double as a costume with the right accessories. Peg Legs from Patterns for Pirates are really popular in the CSC, but any legging pattern would work well. There are lots of options for basic tops too including P4P’s Slim Fit Raglan, Charm Pattern’s Rita Blouse, Scroop Pattern’s Miramar Top, and McCall’s 655.

The Handmaid’s Tale

And lastly, The Handmaid’s Tale was another big hit in entertainment this year. It’s a controversial choice, but also sure to be a popular costume this year. Especially an easy costume if you are also pregnant on Halloween. The pairing of a deep red fabric with a sleeved dress makes this an easy sew with a TNT pattern. Cashmerette’s Turner Dress would be perfect, but Jennifer Lauren’s Laneway Dress, Halla’s Amanda Dress, or Colette’s Moneta would also work well with length added to the skirt.

Lots of classic Halloween characters likes cats, ghosts, vampires, and monsters are also quick to pull together from your existing wardrobe with the right makeup and accessories. Halloween doesn’t have to be hard. It can be stress free and fun too!
