This past fall, a discussion started on the Facebook group about trouser patterns available for those of us with hips in the greater part of the plus-size spectrum. It’s a question we get asked often at the CSC, so imagine our delight when community member Deb stepped up to create a comprehensive list!
Developed throughout the fall of 2016, this resource includes over 330 patterns from a wide array of Indie and Big 4 designers, all of which go up to at least a 50″ hip or above. Connie Crawford fans will see included her patterns for hips measurement 76 inches. Many of these patterns have very diverse size ranges down into the smaller sizes as well. Wow!
For each pattern the following details are given: Pattern Company, Pattern Name or Number, whether the pattern is available for digital download, the maximum hip measurement stated for the pattern, the Fabric Type (woven, knit, etc.), a description and a link to the pattern web site.
Offering something for every seamstress, this resource includes trousers, jeans, leggings, shorts, athletic pants, and some jumpsuits. While some resources refer to trousers as pants, sorry, but no undies are included! The breadth of style, fit and fabric options is fabulous. Joggers, skinny jeans, straight legs, cargo, slim line, harem and pajama pants, cropped short or long. Even Tim Gunn’s dreaded styles are included: the Cargo Capri and the dropped crotch.
You can access the information in two ways:
- as a Google Doc spreadsheet. This link will take you to a view-only version (that means you can’t accidentally change it). I suggest you download it, then re-upload it to your own Google drive or open it with Excel/Numbers, so that you can sort the information by size, pattern company, type of fabric etc. (For example, once you have your own copy, you should be able to sort “Largest Hip Size” by A-Z, giving you the patterns groups from smallest to largest.)
- as a PDF. Click on this link: Plus-Size Pants Patterns Round-Up.xlsx – Sheet1 (3) and you’ll download a 26-page PDF with all the information. Print it or save it on your computer for later!
It is an exciting time to be a plus-size sewer. We hope you will enjoy and will share your results with our Community!

Really helpful stuff on how to go about sewing trousers/ pants and we’re only a few days in. For an intermediate at the less experienced end of the scale it’s so helpful. Thanks to all the contributers so far.
