What adjustments did you make and how long did they take?
I actually didn’t need to make any adjustments at all. Which was really surprising, seeing as I nearly always need an FBA. My new years resolution was to toile every new pattern before I cut into my fashion fabric. It’s a plan that’s been working out well for me, even if sometimes I find I don’t need it. Knowing that things fit before I embark on sewing the finished version totally gives me the gusto to do a great job on seam finishes and little details though.
What was the construction process like? Did the instructions make sense to you?
My only complaint about the pattern instructions was the design of them. The way they’re laid out makes the pattern feel very “indie in a bad way.” Although once you read through them a bit you get the gist. I think I might have been a bit more confused if I’d have been a novice sewist. I also didn’t bother to cut the neckline edging piece of the pattern. I was using a woven and not a knit, so I just took the easy route out and used some of the pre-made bias tape I had in my stash. It worked great and saved a good chunk of my fashion fabric since I didn’t have to cut it on the bias.
How did you like the pattern’s fit? Do you think that the design works well for your body shape?
I really like this pattern’s fit, even though I would wear a belt with it if I was leaving the house. It’s versatile and has awesome pockets. I can see myself making a few of these in easy fabrics like the lawn I used next time I travel.
Will you make this pattern again? If so, what fit or design changes will you make?
I love the way this make turned out, and it’s quick to sew. It took me about two hours to get this dress put together. I’m already planning my next dress, and I’d love to make a tunic version in linen for the summer. The only change I could see myself making in future Fens might be to raise the waistline the tiniest bit. I’m a little short waisted. I’d also like to play with adding some more fullness to the skirt pieces.
Do you have any advice on this pattern for other curvy sewers? Are there any resources or materials that helped you sew this piece up?
It’s an easy sew, and would be very easy to grade up if needed. Check the finished measurements, it’s a very relaxed fitting piece.

I love love love my Fen dress. It’s totally what I wanted the Tilly and the Buttons Bettine dress to be, and it isn’t riddled with fit issues. I might have to make 50 of these little dresses this year.

I’ve made this dress twice now! I wasn’t sure about my first one but I’ve worn it quite a lot so decided on a second but with some fitting alterations – lengthening the bodice by 2 inches and cutting a v-neck as that’s a shape I like.. I love my second one a LOT!

Well…I have 2m of a cotton Liberty-ish print, so I’m practising with that. I’ve squeezed it out of 2 metres by cutting two halves of the back bodice instead of cutting it on the fold so and I’ll piece it together and hope the pattern matching isn’t too off! And I’ve got some readymade binding for the neck…

I love that, it looks lovely on you.
May I ask, how much fabric did you use? I see from the pattern that they say 3 yards, do you think you could get out of a smidgen less? I have 2.5m – or 2.7 yards – of a Liberty Lawn and I think it would look gorgeous in this…

If you just use store bought bias binding to finish the neckline then yes- you could totally get away with less. The bias strip takes up like half a yard.

Great, thanks!

Hey thank you for the review. I didn’t even know about this dress and love the options of dress or top. I ordered it and will give it whirl myself. Your version is lovely on!

Thanks for sharing this, Paige. I’ve had my eye on the pattern for what seems like forever (real time: since it was released which I don’t think was really that long ago). Glad to see it worked for you and went together well. I’ve been trying to get through a few other projects before I buy the pattern, but it may just have to jump the queue!
