I’m truly a believer that anyone of any shape or size can wear any item of clothing… but until recently, I had one clear caveat: no tummy baring! I lived through the traumatic late 80s when low-slung jeans, pierced belly buttons and tight crop tops were in, and let’s just say that I avoided the trend then, and I’ve never felt the will to change.
Until! The new crop top trend: high waisted skirts or pants, paired with crop tops that show a sliver of skin. Not more than about an inch, just underneath your bra band. Now I’ll be honest, to begin I thought “OK, another one for plus sizers to avoid”…. and then I started seeing my curvy fashion idols sporting the look in totally gorgeous fashion!

After an extensive consultation process with my lovely friends at sewing club, I decided to give it a try. Yelp!
Behold, my tummy sliver bearing neon orange (!) crop top / maxi skirt combo:
I still can’t quite believe I wore a crop top in public! More details and photos are at my blog, Cashmerette.
So, yet another plus size fashion myth struck down. Which fashion “rules” do you break and look fabulous while doing it?
Thank you for sharing such beautiful examples! Everyone looks gorgeous. I love your choice in backdrop – soul revival, pun intended yeah? And I love the color of your top. Super fun!
You look great! No idea who any of the other ladies are but they look good too. Surprising isn’t it when you try something you’d never thought of wearing. It looks really cute on you.
Ha ha, they are all plus size fashion bloggers who I love, but definitely not famous in the mainstream! And, thanks 🙂
You rocked this look, awesome!
Thank you Candice!
I never thought cropped tops were for me either. Everyone looks fabulously chic and stylish!
It’s funny what happens when you break your style boundaries, isn’t it!
I commented on your blog before, but I love this on you. You really rock the look and look gorgeous.
Thanks Natalie!
After almost forty years as a belly dancer, I’ve bared my midriff for the last time, thank you for asking. 😉 These ladies, however, all look absolutely adorable and the melon and stripes outfit is killer cute.
You look amazing! I, too, conquered the crop top this summer – made a couple Moneta-based cropped tees to go with my Katy and Laney tap shorts. It felt wonderful to overcome that phobia. Next year: two piece bathing suits. The high waist of the Bombshell view C I think will finally give me the courage to bare a bit more.
Thanks! Ooh I love the idea of a Moneta cropped T, and I also think that “ribdriff” baring two piece swimsuits looks amazing, so I can’t wait to see it!
I saw this amazingness on Pattern Review, but it’s so great that I had to comment here, too! From fit to fabric choice to silhouette, this is just a total win! I want to buy this entire outfit, or at least attempt to copy it. =)
Ha ha, thanks Mads! It was really simple – I think that the fabric was the star in this case 🙂
You look fabulous!!
Thank you Patti!
You are GORGEOUS in this!!!
Thanks!
I love the idea of the crop top with a high waist, and especially loved that two piece Nicollette Mason wore. But your personal version of this trend is my favorite. So lovely in coral and blue with the sweetheart neck. Embrace the tummy sliver!
Yeah Nicolette Mason is one stylish lady!
Still working on the guts to do this myself. You look awesome!
I won’t deny that I had to psych myself up a bit, but no-one pointed/laughed!
Girl you ARE working IT!!! I love it!! It is so perfect on you too. Rock it!!!
Ha ha thanks Sabrina 😀
