Great timing! I hack the heck out of patterns for my kids, when I bother to use them at all, but I am hesitant to hack patterns for myself because my curves intimidate me! I finally did a sort-of hack last week when I put the Decades ESP dress bodice with the Decades Cats Cradle skirt and altered the skirt to have in seam pockets rather than patch pockets. It was successful but only because it was such an easy “hack”, everything matched up perfectly without any adjusting on my part.

Sounds like you’re a successful hacker, Heather!

This theme will be interesting for me because I don’t hack patterns. I studiously follow the instructions as this is how I most enjoy sewing – via the control in what is otherwise a chaotic world outside of sewing.
But I have found myself occasionally wanting to be that sewist who hacks patterns because I perceive it to be a creative act, so…I feel dissonant about the whole idea for myself. I am curious to see if a strategy for approaching a hack is suggested, or is it just a mashup in the end? Get to it and do it, or are there some guidelines to follow?
The thought of putting time and money into a potentially unsucceful effort makes me choose the safest route most of the time.

The posts for August will be a combination of strategies, resources, and tutorials for specific hacks. Hopefully, you’ll find at least some of them inspiring for your hacking ideas.
